This Kochi Associate Says ‘Being Part of Marriott Never Makes You Feel Far From Home’

Name: Greeshma T. Sam
Position: Senior Human Resources Executive
Hotel: Le Méridien Kochi
Dream destination: My dream destination isn’t just one place; I want to explore all the 7 Wonders of the World.
Drink or treat of choice: If I had to pick a drink or treat, I’d go with a classic root beer float. It’s the perfect mix of fizzy and creamy.

The word ‘home’ often brings to mind images of the physical spaces we inhabit, surrounded by the everyday sights and scents of our city. Yet, “home” can also be a feeling – one of comfort, warmth, and a deep sense of familiarity.

For Greeshma, Senior Human Resources Executive in Le Méridien Kochi, that second meaning of “home” is what she feels about Marriott.

Family has always been the foundation of Greeshma’s life. Growing up in Trivandrum, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Kerala, her home is always filled with the warmth of close family bonds. This deep connection to family has shaped not only her personal life but also how she approaches her professional journey.

Greeshma began her early exposure with Marriott in 2019 as an intern at Aloft Bengaluru Cessna Business Park.  During her internship, she realized her passion for developing a long-term career with Marriott.

“The way the company welcomes and trains its associates makes you feel like you’re not just another employee, but a valued member of the family. This sense of inclusion is one of the main reasons I chose to develop my career here.”

Can you share a bit about your current job and how you got here?

I am currently working as Senior Human Resources Executive at Le Méridien Kochi, India. I oversee payroll administration, manage recruitment processes, and drive cultural initiatives to foster a positive and engaging work environment. In 2019, I began my career with Marriott as an intern at Aloft Bengaluru Cessna Business Park.  During this time, I realized my passion for developing a long-term career with Marriott. After my graduation, I joined Le Méridien Mahabaleshwar Resorts and Spa, Pune, in 2021 as an intern in the HR department. Upon completing my six-month internship, I was appointed as HR Associate in February 2022. Subsequently, in the same year, I was promoted to role of the HR Executive. This advancement highlighted my dedication to Marriott’s values and goals. In January 2023, I moved to Le Méridien Kochi as an HR Executive, and in March 2024, I was promoted to Senior HR Executive.

Describe a moment you felt supported at Marriott.

During a challenging period when my mother’s severe health issues and stroke required my temporary relocation, I was about to leave the company, but Marriott provided exceptional support by facilitating a transfer to a location closer to my family while keeping me within the company. This understanding and support was invaluable.

Since joining as an on-the-job HR intern in 2021, Marriott has played a key role in building my confidence, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and collaborate more effectively. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new environment and culture, Marriott’s commitment to putting people first has offered immense support and growth opportunities. This encouragement has fostered a positive atmosphere and enabled me to tackle challenges effectively. Marriott’s dedication to my development through extensive training has been instrumental in refining my skills and expanding my knowledge. I am deeply grateful for these opportunities and look forward to continuing my rewarding journey with Marriott, embracing new challenges, and seizing future opportunities.

How have you felt included or a part of a community at Marriott?

From the very beginning of my journey with Marriott, I felt an undeniable sense of belonging. The way the company welcomes and trains its associates makes you feel like you’re not just another employee, but a valued member of the family. This sense of inclusion is one of the main reasons I chose to develop my career here. Marriott goes above and beyond to support the growth of its associates, offering worldwide opportunities that allow us to advance our careers without ever feeling the need to leave the company.

Can you share an example of when you have felt that sense of belonging at Marriott?

One of the most special aspects of working at Marriott is its celebration of diversity. There are no cultural boundaries — Marriott honors and celebrates all festivals. The inclusive environment is so vibrant, especially during events where associates from various departments come together to embrace and appreciate each other’s unique backgrounds. Being part of Marriott never makes you feel far from home. Witnessing such inclusivity and shared pride in our diversity makes me proud to be a part of this welcoming community.

Share a moment in your career where you felt you made an impact in your local community.

I coordinated with the Home for Physically Handicapped Women in Thevara, Kerala, to bring women with disabilities to our International Women’s Day celebration. It was a wonderful experience for all, especially since it was their first time participating in such an event. Beyond a simple visit to our property, we also organized an exhibition space where they could showcase and sell their handmade crafts. The exhibition was a great success, as all the products were sold. I felt incredibly proud to have taken the initiative and played a role in making this beautiful occasion possible.

Could you share some key highlights and takeaways from your internship?

I had the opportunity to be an intern at Le Meridien Mahabaleshwar Resort & Spa, Pune. One of the key lessons I learned during that time is the value of taking initiative. Every time you take the lead on something, no matter how small, it pushes you closer to your goals and aspirations. Each step forward is a building block toward achieving your dreams. This mindset has stayed with me, and I truly believe that embracing initiative is essential for personal and professional growth.

Proudest moment of your career so far?

One of the proudest and most memorable moments of my career came when I was recognized as the Associate of the Year by the Human Resources department at Le Meridien Kochi. The excitement and pride I felt in that moment were unparalleled. It instantly took me back to the day I shared with my parents the news of receiving my first offer letter to join Marriott. Both experiences brought me immense happiness, as they represented not only key milestones in my professional journey but also the realization of my long-standing aspirations. These moments reaffirmed my passion and commitment to growing within the Marriott family, and I will forever hold them close to my heart.
