This Bartender Found ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ in The Maritimes

Name: Frank N.
Position: Bartender
Hotel: Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel

Old‑school charm has a way of slowing you down in the best possible way. For Frank, that charm shows up everywhere: in vintage cars cruising by, the click of a film camera, and the careful craft of a well‑made cocktail. Based in Halifax, Frank is a Bartender at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, where creativity, connection, and a steady rhythm shape both his workdays and his life outside the bar.

Originally drawn to the Maritimes by the locals’ welcoming spirit and natural beauty, Frank quickly found that the East Coast pace suited him. Halifax is picturesque and poetic, he says, an ideal backdrop for someone who appreciates nostalgia, detail, and moments worth savoring. From experimenting with seasonal cocktails to exploring the coastline with his grandfather’s camera, Frank’s story is about finding inspiration in both craft and place.

What do you do at the Harbourfront?

I’m a bartender, but I also take on some management responsibilities like inventory, making sure we’re ready for the day, and supporting the team. The most important part, and the most fun part, is creating drinks. We change things every quarter, so there’s always something new to work on. You never get bored, which is really important to me.

What’ s your favorite thing about your job at Marriott?

That every day is different, and that keeps things interesting. Marriott has given me a lot of opportunities and challenges, and those challenges help me grow and get better at what I do.

What are your passions outside of work?

My passions revolve around three things. First, cocktails—because at the end of the day, that’s my craft. Second, cars. I love old cars, whether it’s Japanese classics, muscle cars, or vintage European models. There’s a charm to them that modern cars don’t quite have. And third, photography—especially film photography. I’m very old school. My grandfather gave me his old film camera, and it completely changed how I see the world.

How does Marriott support your work-life balance?

The benefits make a big difference. The insurance coverage is extremely helpful—it covers things like dental, massages, and therapy, which I think are really important. The Explore Rate by Marriott Bonvoy associate discount has also helped me travel without worrying about where I’ll stay. Staying at a Marriott property I know the quality and experience I’ll get, which makes it easier to enjoy time off.

What do you love to do outside of work?

I’m really passionate about horses. I volunteer with a therapeutic riding program here in Halifax while I wait to start riding lessons myself. I also enjoy reading, and I’ve recently started practicing yoga and Pilates, which has been the best idea ever. On my days off, I love being outdoors, spending time with friends, and, if possible, being around horses.

What made you choose working in the Maritimes?

People here are incredibly friendly and welcoming. That East Coast spirit is real. Halifax is small enough to enjoy life, but big enough to offer career opportunities. There’s nature everywhere: the sea, the scenery, the calm atmosphere. It’s peaceful, it’s inspiring, and for me, it’s the best of both worlds.
