Was it a bright sign that Marcelo’s first task at Marriott was setting up the Christmas lights in the lobby? Well, we might be biased, but taking into consideration that 22 years later he is still in the company working as an Engineering Director at the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center and Park Tower, a Luxury Collection Hotel Buenos Aires, we think the answer is “yes.”

Marcelo, like many of our associates, started in the company with an internship while he was finishing his studies. By 24, he was already leading a team of people for the first time and then he kept growing within the Engineering department in different properties. “All these experiences were the basis for finding myself in the position of Engineering Director I have today.”

Learn more about Marcelo’s journey in his own words below.

What inspired you to keep taking steps to grow in your career?

The sum of experiences forges one’s personality and temperance. Definitely one of the most influential factors throughout my career was having gone through all the different positions in the Engineering department. That gave me a broad vision and great help when making decisions. Another important factor is the mentors that one has throughout their career. Professional people who are always willing to give good advice.

What does a good day at work look like for you?

I usually start my day cycling from home to work. Once I get to the hotel, I meet with my team, and we discuss the day’s work. Being a purely operational job and in one of the largest hotels in the region, one does not have time to get stuck in routine. Every day is different.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job, without a doubt, is creating, having the possibility of generating an idea, and seeing the process until it comes to fruition. Something that I also value a lot is being able to see the growth of my team and providing job opportunities for new generations who are undoubtedly the future of the company.

And the most challenging?

One of the most challenging tasks of my position is interpersonal relationships and effective communication. Two skills that I must work on daily.

What skills do you think are the most important to be successful in your role?

Being able to analyze all the variables and being true to your principles are usually great allies to live up to the commitment that the position requires.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Attitude is everything. The way in which you face your problems is directly aligned with the success you will have in solving them. Also being able to work as part of a team is something extremely important. Lastly, know how to listen, be analytical, and be decisive.

What future experiences or goals are you looking forward to?

I am currently focused on several sustainability projects, coordinating the actions of the Ecological Committee, and trying to obtain certifications that support our work. And supporting all the new leaders in the region. We are expanding in the region exponentially, which is why it is extremely important that we all contribute our knowledge to the new generations.
