Just this year, Vanna took on an additional role as Chairman of the NextGen Business Councils for Thailand and Cambodia. He leads initiatives focused on community support, sustainability, inclusion, and associate development.

“One thing I can say that makes me especially proud to be part of the hotel team is: I feel a sense of belonging, I open doors for everyone, I empathize with team members, I put people first, I accept differences, I show my winning team, and I offer support when needed.”

From training and language support to community leadership, Vanna’s impact spans far beyond his job title, as reflected in the conversation below.

Tell us about your career journey and what brought you to Marriott.

I started my hotel career in China, working for other hotel brands for five years—from Concierge to Assistant Training Manager. I joined Marriott in 2024 as a Training Manager at Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Since then, I’ve learned and developed a lot. Marriott offers many training opportunities, including on-the-job learning and leadership development, like what I participated in through the En Route program. I also use self-learning tools like Marriott Global Source, Digital Learning Zone, and the Become Library, which keep me excited and motivated.

What’s something about your hotel’s culture that you felt right away, even in your first week?

The culture at my hotel reflects both Marriott’s and Courtyard’s values. I was surprised and impressed by how well-prepared and welcoming everyone was. Before my first day, my manager sent me a plan. When I arrived, department heads introduced themselves, my name was posted on the information board, and a team guided me through onboarding. I felt valued and like I truly belonged.

What does a good day at work look like for you?

A good day is when I learn something new, share it with my team, and see them achieve their goals.

What part of your role brings you the most pride?

As a Training Manager, I love to guide, coach, and support the team—especially when they need help. I always make myself available and accessible. I want my team to grow, so I encourage them, remind them of their goals, and celebrate their achievements.

Any tips for candidates who want a role like yours?

Hospitality is about service—to both guests and team members. If you’re applying for a manager role, you should know how to lead a team, create strategies, communicate effectively, solve problems, and support learning and development. Be a role model for others.

Can you think of a moment when your team really showed up for each other? What happened?

In my experience, there are two ways a team shows up. First, when someone needs help—asking questions, sharing ideas, or giving feedback—the team is there. Second, when we celebrate achievements or share important updates, we involve everyone.

This is what we do every day. Everyone feels a sense of belonging and recognition. That’s what teamwork is about. When the team is empowered and happy to work together, our property succeeds—and so do we.
