For Harry, a Residences Liaison at The St. Regis Mexico City, Marriott’s emphasis on inclusivity and diversity has helped him feel seen and safe in a way no other employer ever has.
“As an LGBTQ+ individual, I have always felt supported and included at Marriott, which has not been my experience at previous workplaces,” he says. “Here, I have always felt respected and valued for who I am, and that has made a huge difference in my overall experience. I can truly be myself and feel accepted, and the positive and inclusive work environment has allowed me to thrive.”

After moving from his home country of Honduras—where he worked as a supervisor at an interpreting company—to Mexico City in 2019, The St. Regis Mexico City quickly hired Harry as a Residences Concierge, his first job in the hospitality industry. He’s since been promoted to Residences Liaison, a role in which he manages the relationship between residences’ owners and tenants to ensure satisfaction and coordinate any accommodations they request.

In large part, Harry’s contribution to that diversity and inclusion emphasis has come via his involvement in Marriott’s LGBTQ+|ONE Associate Resource Group (ARG). Below, learn about how Harry found a sense of belonging in his role at The St. Regis Mexico City, and how his ARG involvement nurtures his engagement, personal happiness, and professional success.
How would you describe Marriott’s culture?
Marriott’s culture is diverse and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on equality and acceptance. The company values and celebrates the unique perspectives and contributions from all individuals, regardless of their culture, country of origin, race, sexual orientation or gender identity. Marriott actively promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion and strives to create a welcoming and supportive environment for both associates and guests. This culture of acceptance and respect is evident in the company’s policies and initiatives like the LGBTQ+|ONE Associate Resource Group. Marriott truly embodies the spirit of equality and provides a safe and inclusive space for everyone within the LGBTQ+ community.
Tell us about your involvement in LGBTQ+|ONE.
I joined the LGBTQ+|ONE community to participate and promote inclusivity and equality in our Marriott properties. My goal has always been to create a safe and welcoming space for individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
The LGBTQ+ community has always held a special place in my heart, and I wanted to be part of a group that works to support and celebrate LGBTQ+ employees within the organization. Being a part of this resource group has enriched my experience at Marriott in numerous ways. For one example, it’s provided me with a sense of belonging and connection to a community of like-minded individuals who share similar experiences and challenges. Overall, my goal is to continue fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for all LGBTQ+ associates within the Marriott International family.
How has LGBTQ+|ONE contributed to your personal and professional growth?
Through LGBTQ+|ONE, I’ve gained resources and connections that have helped me feel supported and empowered in both my personal and professional life. I’ve been able to access mentorship opportunities and connect with other LGBTQ+ individuals in my industry. LGBTQ+|ONE has also helped me gain a deeper understanding of issues in this community and advocacy opportunities around the world, which has helped me to become a more informed and active ally in my workplace and community.
How do you think LGBTQ+|ONE has contributed to fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace?
LGBTQ+|ONE helps foster a more inclusive and diverse workplace by creating a supportive and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ associates around the globe. It has also guided all associates to have a better understanding about the LGBTQ+ community thanks to networking events, mentorship programs and educational resources. LGBTQ+|ONE provides a platform for employees to connect, learn and grow within the organization, which has helped to break down barriers and dismantle stereotypes, leading to a more open and accepting workplace culture where everyone can feel valued and respected.
Ultimately, I am proud to be a part of Marriott and The St. Regis Mexico City team, and I’m grateful for the opportunities and support they have always provided me.
What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?
My career path so far has been full of blessings. If I had to choose one proud moment it would be when I became a member of the International Society of Residential Concierges. I have always given my 100% in everything that I do, and this was a testament to my hard work and dedication to providing the best possible experience for all who visit our residences. It was a reminder that I am making a positive impact in the hospitality industry and that I am able to bring my authentic self to my work every day.
How have you used the Marriott Explore Rate?
I love using my Marriott Explore Rate when I travel with my family, friends or by myself. My mom and I traveled to Europe, and we went to several Marriott properties and enjoyed our discounts; this is one of the best perks we can have as Marriott associates. Plus, being recognized as a Marriott associate at these properties makes you feel welcomed everywhere you go. I also love that I can share this perk with my friends and family — my older brother who lives in Ontario loves being a Marriott Bonvoy member and he just recently reached Titanium Elite status! He has enjoyed every property he has traveled to around the globe, one of his favorites being The St. Regis Toronto.
