How This Veteran Found a New Mission in Hospitality

Name: R.J. H.
Position: Director of Facilities Services, Texas and Louisiana
Dream destination: Greece and Italy
Drink or treat of choice: An ice-cold glass of milk and a warm chocolate brownie

When R.J. left the Air Force after a decade of service, he wasn’t chasing a dream job—he was just trying to find his footing in civilian life. “I was simply looking for a job where I could apply my HVAC and refrigeration training,” he says. What he didn’texpect to find, was a new mission, a new team, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Today, as Director of Facilities, R.J. leads engineering operations across Texas and Louisiana for Marriott, but his path here wasn’t linear. It was shaped by resilience, a willingness to pivot, and a deep appreciation for the kind of camaraderie he thought he’d left behind in the military. “Since day one with Marriott, I’ve been surrounded by supportive, caring individuals who’ve made me feel valued and included,” he shares. “That sense of connection reminded me a lot of my time in the service.”

What drew you to Marriott after your service?

Like many people, I kind of stumbled into hospitality, but I can tell you exactly why I stayed. It truly comes down to the people. Since day one, I’ve been surrounded by supportive, caring individuals who’ve made me feel valued and included. That sense of camaraderie reminded me a lot of my time in the service. The values that define military service—discipline, teamwork, leadership, and commitment to excellence—align closely with the core principles of hospitality. It’s a place where veterans can continue to serve, lead, and make a meaningful impact.

How would you describe your experience at Marriott?

I feel like I belong here. When you feel like you belong, you don’t just show up, you lean in, contribute, and grow.

How did your Marriott career begin

After leaving the military in 2018, I wanted to apply my technical training. I started as an HVAC-certified building engineer at a hotel in Springfield, Illinois. Within 11 months, I was opening a hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, and in 2019 I joined Marriott as Director of Engineering at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown. Later, I moved to Texas to lead engineering at the Westin Irving Convention Center. Since March 2025, I’ve been overseeing Facilities Services for Texas and Louisiana. It’s been an incredible six years filled with mentors and friends who inspire me daily.

How has your military experience helped you succeed at Marriott?

The ability to remain calm under pressure has served me well. Whether it’s a burst pipe in the lobby at 2 a.m. or an upset guest, staying composed and confident helps the team succeed.

What advice would you give to veterans transitioning to hospitality?

If you’re seeking purpose after the service, hospitality can be your next mission. At Marriott, I’ve found a renewed sense of belonging and camaraderie that mirrors what I experienced in the military. It’s a place where veterans can continue to serve, lead, and make a meaningful impact.
