The Journey from Part-Time Front Desk Associate to Senior Sales Executive at Gaylord Pacific

Name: Melisa W.
Position: Senior Sales Executive
Hotel: Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center
Dream destination: All of the castle-like properties in our collection have been added to my bucket list. I can’t just pick out one!

After working in seemingly every sales position at Marriott covering the Orange County and San Diego areas, Melisa landed her current role as Senior Sales Executive on the pre-opening team of Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center at a time when she had to make a big move.

“When my husband accepted a Vice President role with Hoover Vacuums it required our family to move from San Diego to North Carolina,” she recalls. “The company’s flexible work schedule allowed me to manage the relocation process effectively while maintaining my professional responsibilities in a new market.”

Today, Melisa works remotely managing the Southeast territory of potential Gaylord Pacific clients. Her role is focused on driving sales and cultivating strong relationships before this new massive resort officially opens its doors in spring 2025.

Thanks to its 1,600 guest rooms and suites, its own waterpark, 477,000 square feet of convention space, and 10 restaurants and bars, the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center is expected to draw masses to this Pacific coastline haven and Melissa is one of the people making sure this happens.

Whether it’s with guests, team members, or the wider community, these connections will enrich your career and enhance the quality of service that defines the brand,” she says, adding her own pitch for those considering the Gaylord Pacific as a place to work.

How did you get started in sales?

My career journey with Marriott began during my college years, and it has been an incredible experience filled with growth, learning, and opportunities. My first role at Marriott was as a Front Desk Associate at the Residence Inn and Newport Coast Villas. Balancing my college studies with a part-time job, I found this position to be the perfect introduction to the hospitality industry. My journey then progressed into Sales as a Sales Manager in the Event Booking Center, which later transitioned into an Account Executive role, covering the Orange County and San Diego markets. Following this, I advanced to Senior Sales Executive at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, which ultimately led to my current role as Senior Sales Executive on the pre-opening team for Gaylord Pacific.

What would you tell people who are interested in becoming a star at Gaylord Pacific?

The culture here is built on a foundation of respect, inclusivity, and a shared passion for excellence. It’s a place where every individual is valued, and every contribution matters. As a Star at Gaylord Pacific, you’ll have the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. The company encourages continuous learning and provides platforms for you to shine and showcase your talents. Your journey here is not just about the work you do but also about the person you become.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Building long-term relationships with coworkers and clients is not just a part of my job; it’s the part that brings the most fulfillment and joy. It’s where teamwork and collaboration transform into something more profound—a genuine connection that transcends mere professional interaction. As I reflect on my favorite part of the job, it’s clear that it’s the people—their stories, their ambitions, and their trust—that make every day worthwhile. It’s a reminder that at the heart of business, it’s the human connection that matters most.

And how do you make these genuine connections?

There’s nothing quite like face-to-face interaction. Visiting clients allows me to step into their world, understand their challenges firsthand, and build rapport that goes beyond business.  I have made some of my lifelong best friends through [this work].

How are you empowered to achieve the extraordinary in your role?

I have the freedom to make strategic decisions that align with the hotel’s vision while catering to the specific needs of the Southeast Market. I play a crucial role in shaping the hotel’s brand, creating a unique identity that resonates with Southeast Clients.

Tell us about some of the most special moments you’ve been a part of at Gaylord.

When our Southeast team was honored as the Team of the Year in 2023. The award is a testament to the hard work, passion, and teamwork that define our culture at Gaylord Hotels. Moments like these inspire us to continue striving for excellence and creating lasting memories. Equally remarkable was the topping-off ceremony of Gaylord Pacific, where we honored over 1,000 dedicated construction workers.

What do you do for fun?

In my free time I enjoy watching my younger son Dylan play on a Travel 11U Baseball team, and my older son Aaron play on a Travel Basketball team. As a family we enjoy spending time on Lake Norman when we are not at sports tournaments.
