From Bangkok’s Bustling Streets to Phuket’s Serene Shores: How This Manager’s Leaps of Faith Redefined Her Career

Name: Arisa Pasut
Position: Senior Learning & Development Manager
Hotel: JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa
Dream destination: Switzerland. I’ve always wanted to see the Geneva Water Fountain and marvel at its impressive height. The country’s natural beauty, from serene lakes to the majestic Swiss Alps that I’ve admired in movies since childhood, captivates me. As a chocolate lover, I can’t wait to taste the finest Swiss chocolate. I’m excited to explore the blend of German, French, and Italian cultures that make Switzerland unique.
Drink or treat of choice: My go-to drink is a refreshing Gin & Tonic — it’s perfect for relaxing after a long day. And when it comes to treats, nothing beats 70% dark chocolate. The mix of bitterness and sweetness not only delights my taste buds but also gives me a nice boost of energy and happiness.

Remember the saying, ‘The world is your oyster’? Well, that perfectly describes Arisa’s inspiring career with Marriott.

Hailing from the bustling city of Bangkok, Thailand, Arisa began her Marriott journey as an Executive Assistant on the pre-opening team of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park in 2016. Her passion and zeal for her work earned her a promotion to Secretary in the same hotel. She found an interest in Learning & Development, and successfully transitioned into the role of Assistant Training Manager–her first big career leap.

In 2022, Arisa took another bold leap when she was offered the role of Training Manager at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. Venturing beyond a life of familiarity and stepping into an entirely new world is a brave move, but for Arisa, this decision to move from Bangkok to peaceful Phuket Island was natural, motivated by her desire for professional and personal growth.

Phuket is a tropical paradise with stunning beaches, like Mai Khao Beach–the longest beach in Phuket and home to JW Marriott Phuket. From the breathtaking sunsets to the calming vibe, the resort offers an unforgettable experience for guests and associates alike–completely different from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Arisa’s move to JW Marriott Phuket taught her that true growth and happiness is achieved outside your comfort zone. Her journey is proof that it is never too late to embrace change and pursue a path of passion that leads to both success and satisfaction.

Discover more about this Senior Learning & Development Manager’s Marriott experience through her eyes!

It’s been a fruitful eight years since you began your Marriott career – tell us about your journey.

My journey with Marriott began in June 2016 as an Executive Assistant to the Director of Rooms at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park during its pre-opening phase. By August 2017, I transitioned to the role of Secretary to the Resident Manager. Driven by my orientation experience and a desire to enter Learning & Development (L&D), I aimed for the Assistant Training Manager role in early 2018, despite lacking L&D experience. With guidance from HR and the Director of Talent & Development, I successfully transitioned from administrative roles to Human Resources.  In July 2019, I was promoted to HR Relations Manager, where I handled associate activities and talent acquisition. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, I took on the role of Training Manager at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa in January 2022. By January 2024, I was promoted to Senior Learning & Development Manager.

Describe a moment you felt supported at Marriott.

From the moment I walked in for a job interview in 2016, I felt supported by Marriott. The warm welcome during the application process set the tone for my entire journey with the company. Marriott gave me the chance to explore a new career field, even without prior experience. The opportunities for learning and growth have been incredibly meaningful, and I am deeply grateful. The core value of “Putting People First” truly resonates with me because I’ve experienced it first-hand. In my HR role, I cherish the Serve360 commitment and strongly believe in giving back and support to the community.

How would you describe your experience as a Marriott associate?

Joining Marriott is the best decision I’ve ever made. My experience as a Marriott associate has been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. The core value of “Putting People First” is evident in everything we do. The company fosters curiosity and supports continuous learning, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. Being part of the largest travel company has connected me with sister properties, where we share best practices, celebrate successes, and support one another. I’m passionate about serving our world, and Marriott has provided me with numerous opportunities to make a positive impact both within and outside the company.

Sounds like you’ve experienced many wins at Marriott! What is the proudest moment of your career so far?

As an L&D leader, my proudest moments come from witnessing the growth and success of my associates. Whether it’s seeing them promoted, excelling in the next step of their careers, or guiding junior leaders to confidently step into leadership roles, it’s incredibly rewarding to know I’ve played a part in their journey. I also take great pride in our student trainees who graduate and secure jobs at JW Marriott Phuket, with some even transferring to work overseas. Seeing all this success has never made me prouder. I like to think of my role as a ship, helping others cross the river to greener, greater opportunities.

Share a moment you felt like part of a community at Marriott.

The moment I truly felt part of the community was at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, where we proudly partnered with the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, based at our resort. Learning about their mission to protect sea turtles and the beach ecosystem has been inspiring. We’ve organized activities such as turtle release events and beach clean-ups, which have united associates, guests, and locals for meaningful experiences. I also include sessions with the foundation in our orientation to raise awareness among new associates. Additionally, my team and I have helped offer bartending classes to students at an underprivileged school, sharing our expertise with the younger generation. These experiences have deepened my connection to the Marriott community and our shared commitment to making a positive impact.

It’s clear you love being at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa! What stands out to you as the best part about life on Phuket Island?

Phuket, Thailand, is a tropical paradise with stunning beaches, and vibrant culture and diversity. One of my favorite spots is Mai Khao Beach, the longest in Phuket and home to JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, where I work. Known for its peaceful, laid-back atmosphere, it’s the perfect escape from the busier areas like Patong or Phuket Town. The beach is quiet, making it ideal for a peaceful stroll while soaking in the natural beauty. The resort itself is a blend of luxury and serenity, offering top-notch amenities and warm hospitality. From the breathtaking sunsets and lush surroundings to the calm, relaxing vibe, Mai Khao Beach and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa offer an unforgettable experience. I also love having fresh coconut juice, which is everywhere here and so hydrating!

What is your advice for associates beginning their careers with Marriott or looking to pivot and explore new opportunities?

My advice is to embrace a mindset of continuous learning. Each day, ask yourself, “Is this the best I can do?” Discover your passion—what you love to do—and let that guide your growth.  Never hesitate to ask questions—there’s no such thing as a silly question, only opportunities to become smarter. I live by Mr. Marriott’s words: “See every problem as an opportunity to grow.” This has always pushed me to take on challenges, no matter how difficult they may seem. You won’t know what you’re capable of until you try. Seek out role models who inspire you, and don’t shy away from asking for feedback and coaching—it’s how you’ll grow stronger. Take full advantage of being part of the largest travel company in the world—stay connected, learn from new cultures, and build meaningful relationships. Get involved in activities, volunteer for causes, and lend your support to others. You’ll be surprised by how much impact you can make in fostering the strong Marriott culture. Most importantly, trust in yourself. Marriott believes in you, and with the resources here, you can grow into whoever you aspire to become.
