Name: Obi J.
Position: Hotel Manager
Hotel: The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes
Dream destination: It was Hawaii, but I have already fulfilled that one! Staying in one of those bungalows over the water in Bali might be my next dream vacation spot.
Drink or treat of choice: A good taco or some enchiladas always hit the spot for me. Of course, always accompanied by a good Paloma.
Sometimes the most pivotal chapters in a career begin in unexpected ways. For Obi, a new opportunity at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne became the turning point that launched his Marriott leadership journey.
“It turned out to be one of the most pivotal moments of my career,” he says.

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne was the place where Obi shifted from operations to leadership, stepping into his first Marriott management role. The fast-paced, high-volume environment—and the tight-knit team behind it—helped shape his approach to resilience, strategy, and people-first leadership.
One defining moment? When the resort’s Cantina restaurant was shut down due to a fire, he was tasked with quickly reorganizing operations during full occupancy. “I had to act quickly… without compromising the Ritz-Carlton standard,” he recalls. “That experience taught me the true meaning of resilience, teamwork, and the importance of being prepared for the unexpected.”
Today, Obi brings those lessons with him in his role as Hotel Manager at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. But it was at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne where his leadership foundation was built.

“It’s where I grew as a leader, built lasting relationships, and worked alongside some truly amazing Ladies and Gentlemen,” he says.
What first brought you to the resort—what were you looking for in that moment of your career or life?
In 2008, when the economy took a downturn, my position as a L.I.V.E. Leader in Orlando was eliminated. It was a challenging moment, but Mr. Flint and Rosa Tamajon welcomed me with open arms, offering me an opportunity that turned out to be one of the most pivotal in my career.
What stands out most about the culture or work environment there?
What stands out most about the culture at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne is that it’s truly all about the people. While I’ve experienced professional growth during my time there, what gives me even greater pride is seeing the journeys of those I worked alongside—many of whom have gone on to take on bigger roles across the company.
How has Marriott supported your family?
Working at Marriott we have been able to support our kids in following their dreams with a great education and the resources they need to pursue their dreams. Our son Max has been passionate about music since middle school; he participated in band and, later in high school, the marching band. Today, Max is a United States Marine and continues his passion for music in the Marine Corps Band. Working for Marriott has also supported us in purchasing our home, where we have created so many special memories over the years.

How did you see the Marriott Leadership Essentials—Be Curious, Be Courageous, Be Connected—come to life in your time at the resort?
‘Be Curious’ showed up every day as I learned from seasoned leaders and navigated the complexities of a high-volume resort. I asked questions, explored new ways to improve service, and stayed open to feedback. ‘Be Courageous’ was tested during one of the most challenging moments of my career—the day we lost our Cantina restaurant to a fire. With a full house of leisure guests and one less outlet to serve them, I had to make quick decisions, adapt operations, and lead with confidence. And ‘Be Connected’ was the foundation that made it all possible. The support I received—from my team, from Mr. Flint and Rosa Tamajon, and from the broader Ritz-Carlton family—reminded me that leadership is never a solo journey. Staying connected to our Ladies and Gentlemen, and fostering trust and collaboration, was what allowed us to overcome challenges and continue delivering exceptional service.
What’s one thing you learned or experienced at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne that you will carry with you for your career?
That project truly tested and sharpened my strategic planning skills. It wasn’t just about rebuilding a restaurant—it was about creating a concept that reflected the future of dining, aligned with guest expectations, and elevated the resort’s culinary identity.

What would you tell someone considering a role at the resort?
“If I had the chance to do it all over again, I absolutely would. It challenged me, helped me grow, and connected me with incredible leaders and teammates.”
