Work Permits & Visas in Germany

Like in other European countries such as France and the Netherlands, EU citizens can work in Germany without a permit. If you’re not an EU citizen, you will need to apply for a permit. You can do this at the Foreigner’s Registration Office. Note that we don’t generally offer sponsorship for these permits.

Accommodation in Germany

Some of our hotels in Germany can provide associates in specific job roles with accommodation. Ask us at interview if you’d like to know more about any accommodation options available to you.

Germany Language Requirements

Our associates in Germany generally need a good working knowledge of English, both conversational and written. For most positions, you’ll also need a solid level of German to help you in your day-to-day duties. This will vary from hotel to hotel, and the requirements may even vary across different departments. The job advert should list out any language requirements per role.

Health Insurance For Associates in Germany

Health insurance is compulsory in Germany, and all associates are eligible for statutory health cover.

Transport to Work in Germany

You’ll usually need to organise and pay for your own transport when getting to and from work, although some hotels issue an allowance to help staff with their costs. We may also cover some costs for business trips for associates in certain roles. Ask us if you would like more details about the local transport options.

Pensions For Associates in Germany

It’s compulsory in Germany to pay into a statutory pension scheme. Both the employee and employer contribute to this through salary payments, and some roles will be eligible for a company pension, too. Any end of service payments will be considered on an individual basis.

Bonuses in Germany

Annual Leave in Germany

Marriott’s annual leave allowance in Germany starts at 25 days a year for full-time contracts and can increase to 30 days, depending on how long you’ve worked for us.

Sick Leave Policy for Germany

As an associate at Marriott in Germany you are eligible for sick leave on full pay for the first 42 days of illness or injury. After that, you may be able to get sick pay from your health insurance this can be up to 70% of gross income, for 78 weeks within three years, for the same illness or injury.

You’ll need to talk to your manager as soon as you become unwell, and for longer leave you will need to provide a medical certificate.

Maternity, Parental & Adoption Leave

Expectant mothers can get 14 weeks of paid maternity leave (6 weeks before and 8 weeks after the birth, covered by statutory health insurance) to prepare for and welcome their newborn.

Partners in Germany are eligible for parental leave, which can be shared with their partner. As part of this, a parent can take unpaid leave (while their job is protected) to look after their child until they turn three. During this time they may be eligible for up to 14 months of ‘parental allowance’ or up to 28 months of ‘parental allowance plus’. These allowances are calculated on an individual basis.

Adoptive parents are eligible for the same parental leave and benefits as biological parents, starting from the date the child joins the family.

Relocation Support to Germany

Salary Payment in Germany

Salaries in Germany are paid monthly in line with the local minimum wage regulations. Note that these don’t always apply to certain internship and trainee programs. Salary specifications may vary between hotels.

Night Shift & Overtime Pay

Payment for night shift work and overtime can differ between hotels and contract types.

Reference Checks in Germany

We will need to see at least one reference from a previous job or school/university before we can offer you a position in Germany. We usually ask to see three references for manager-level applications.

Medical Screening

We may need to see a medical certificate from you before offering you a role in Germany, particularly if you’re applying for night work. Contact us if you have any questions about this process.

On-Duty Meals

Our associates can get meals in our staff canteens while they are at work. Associates may need to cover the tax on these meals.

Uniform Allowance Policy

If you need a uniform to carry out your duties, we will supply one. If you don’t wear a uniform you can still access the free in-house laundry service.

Full & Part-Time Working

We offer a variety of contracts in Germany to suit different needs, including full-time, part-time and casual contracts.
