An Amsterdam-Based Operations Manager on Building a Career That Makes a Difference

Name: Chiara M.
Position: Operations Manager
Hotel: Courtyard by Marriott Amsterdam Arena Atlas

When Chiara moved from Italy to Amsterdam, she didn’t just change countries, she shifted perspectives. “Coming from Italy, where overworking often feels like the norm, moving to the Netherlands and experiencing such a healthy work–life balance was actually a bit of a challenge at first,” she shares. “It felt strange not to be ‘always on.’” But over time, she embraced the change, discovering a culture that values both personal well-being and professional development.

Now thriving in her role as Operations Manager at the Courtyard by Marriott Amsterdam Arena Atlas, Chiara reflects on how the move has opened doors. “Professionally, the Netherlands has been fantastic. It’s so much easier here to grow, to find opportunities, and to develop yourself.” And while she misses the sun, the food, and her lifelong friends back home, she’s found a new kind of connection — one built on purpose, community, and the joy of learning from others.

What first brought you to hospitality, and what’s kept you in it?

I wanted to travel and feel free. At first, I thought moving around was the answer, but I learned that changing places isn’t the solution on its own. What’s kept me here is the energy, the variety, and the people. It’s a unique and fulfilling industry.

You are part of the Next Gen Business Council, what does that experience mean to you?

It’s a chance to connect with general managers and peers who care about growth and innovation. What I love most is that it’s not just about work, it’s about making a difference.

Is there a moment in your career you’re especially proud of?

I’m proud of the impact I’ve had on people. Colleagues have told me they feel appreciated and seen, and that I’ve stayed humble. That means a lot.

What do you hope to do next in your career, any ideas you’re excited to explore in the future?

I’m excited to continue growing in leadership and exploring opportunities where I can make a meaningful impact. My best friend often says I have “la vocazione” — a true calling — and that perhaps I’d thrive in an NGO or something that has a social impact, focusing on causes I care deeply about, like equality and creating opportunities for children.
