Name: Cherdchai Nillaca
Position: Gardener Supervisor
Hotel: Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach
Dream destination: The Chiang Rai province. It is challenging to find the perfect time to visit, having been born in the Northeast and living in the South. One of my must-visit destinations is Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. It is particularly special to me for its breathtaking and unique architecture, and intriguing historical and cultural significance.
Drink or treat of choice: My favorite dish is pizza, which pairs perfectly with a cold root beer.
Just as a gardener tailors care to each plant’s specific needs, a great leader nurtures each employee to their individual needs to help them flourish. This philosophy perfectly embodies Cherdchai Nillaca – Gardener Supervisor, disability advocate, and an active champion for accessibility in the workplace.
In 2018, Cherdchai began his Marriott journey as a Gardener Supervisor at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach. Drawing from a wealth of experience as a Chief Gardener, he is the driving force behind the maintenance of the hotel’s lush landscapes, ensuring the property reflects the natural beauty of Phuket.

Cherdchai’s approach to his role goes beyond maintaining landscapes; it’s also about cultivating people. Embodying Marriott’s culture of Putting People First, he believes in fostering an inclusive workplace where career opportunities are accessible to all.
“Our hotel is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of disability, is given equal opportunities,” Cherdchai says. “When I train my team, I get to customize my training to suit their understanding and abilities.”
As part of his supervisory position, Cherdchai manages Akaradat, an associate with an intellectual disability, who joined the company six years ago. Cherdchai has actively adjusted his leadership and training to cater to Akaradat’s needs – providing one-on-one coaching rather than the usual classroom training. Under Cherdchai’s guidance, Akaradat has picked up every gardening task with enthusiasm and dedication.
Akaradat shared that he loves being assigned to the garden and is glad to see progress in his job. Today, he completes his tasks with little difficulty and delivers quality work. Cherdchai has played a pivotal role in supporting Akaradat, sowing seeds of confidence and helping him thrive in his role.

Tell us about your Marriott career journey — what were you doing previously and how has your career changed while at Marriott?
I previously worked at a different hotel in Phuket as a Chief Gardener for many years. When I came across the Gardener Supervisor vacancy at Phuket Marriott Merlin Beach, I decided to apply. My decision was driven by the reputation of Marriott as a global leader in the hospitality industry. I strongly believed that joining Marriott would provide me with better financial stability and opportunities for career growth.
Proudest moment of your career so far?
I was honored with a nomination for Supervisor of the Year (Heart of the House) in the Marriott Thailand Recognition Awards 2023. This recognition fills me with pride, and I am truly grateful to the hotel for acknowledging my contributions.
You’ve worked with associates with disabilities — how do you support them in their work?
In 2018, Akaradat was accompanied by his mother to the hotel to enquire on a suitable role for him. The team arranged for him to join my (gardening) team, and he has been with us for 6 years now.
During the initial stages of Akaradat’s journey at work, particularly given his intellectual disability, I identified and took the initiative to establish a more effective way of communication by involving his mother. This approach ensured that important information, such as work schedules and announcements, was directly communicated to her, creating clear and accessible channels.
Additionally, I conducted one-on-one coaching sessions with Akaradat to ensure he was fully capable of performing his daily tasks and responsibilities.
What is a stereotype or misconception about people with disabilities that you wish more people understood?
It is important not to see or separate this group of associates solely based on their disabilities. They should be recognized as valuable team members like any other associate, who require care, communication, opportunities for career development, and a sense of inclusion within their team.
How has Marriott and your hotel made the workplace more accessible and inclusive for associates with disabilities?
Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is given equal opportunities. By allowing full participation in all programs, we promote fairness and inclusion for all associates. For example, when I train my team, I get to customize my training to suit their understanding and abilities.
How can people with disabilities be empowered to make a meaningful impact in the workplace?
Career or skills development training programs, conducted by professionals who are equipped to communicate with individuals with intellectual or communication disabilities, along with the provision of tools or technologies that enhance effective communication between employees with disabilities and their colleagues, can significantly improve workplace inclusion.
Additionally, implementing awareness training for supervisors and managers who oversee employees with disabilities is crucial. This ensures the right mindset and proper understanding when managing and interacting with them. These initiatives will not only support the growth of associates with disabilities but also contribute to a more collaborative, inclusive, and efficient work environment.
Any advice for incoming Marriott associates?
I believe that this company is an open opportunity for everyone from everything that they do. It shows our dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace that values talent, potential, and ambition. At our core, we believe in empowering individuals based on their abilities and aspirations, not their limitations.
