‘I Feel Like a Member of the Marriott Family:’ How This Afghan Refugee Found His Place at Marriott

After the government collapsed in Afghanistan, Malyar and his wife fled the country to find a safe place to live.  

In his hometown, Malyar worked as an interpreter and employee trainer for US logistics companies. Thanks to his English and computer skills, when his family resettled in San Antonio, Texas, he soon found a job in that same field and, six months after arriving in the US, he got a job at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa.

Malyar’s first position at Marriott was as an interpreter and dispatcher in the housekeeping department. After a year in the role and sensing his expertise and eagerness to learn and grow as a professional, Malyar’s managers were quick to promote him to the Assistant Room Operations Manager role he proudly holds today.  

“I am ready to take on a new challenge in the management role to enhance my knowledge, boost my experience, and get closer to my career goals,” Malyar says.

How would you describe Marriott’s culture?  

The core values of Marriott make the associates who they are. Have you felt supported at Marriott?  

The management and my colleagues are always there to support us on how to get closer to our goal. I appreciate the opportunity JW Marriott has given me to overcome a lot of my challenges and am grateful to have such a supportive management team and wonderful coworkers. 

How has Marriott supported your family?  

Besides giving me the opportunity to grow, I earn money so I can afford my expenses to support my family.  

How has Marriott helped you feel like you belong?  

I feel like a member of the Marriott family.  

What are some of those opportunities that have helped you grow professionally?  

As an Interpreter/ Dispatcher I learned [technical] skills like using PMS, GXP, and Rex. [I’ve also learned] dispatching Housekeeping daily operational duties to others, facilitating communication for Afghan Employees with their English-Speaking colleagues, and assisting in Rooms Operations.

What is your favorite part of the job?  

As a Rooms Operations Assistant Manager my favorite part of the job is to deliver an excellent guest and member experience while evaluating guest satisfaction and setting department targets and objectives.  

What advice would you give someone with a similar background to you, who is looking to make a change in their life or career?  

Always keep on learning new concepts and technologies that will help advance your career. Be proactive, grab opportunities and do your best.
