Name: Nikki S.
Position: Administrative Assistant Sales
Location: Marriott HQ in Bethesda, MD
Dream destination: Venice. Each narrow alleyway and serene canal seem to whisper a story, which I find deeply inspiring for my work.
Drink or treat of choice: I am going to be completely transparent here: Cantina di Casteggio sweet white wine with a bag of Cheetos Puffs. It’s a unique pairing that I find surprisingly delightful!
If you happen to come across one of Nikki’s poems or books, you’d probably never guess that behind the author is someone with an almost three-decade-long Marriott administrative career.
The first page of Nikki’s Marriott journey started as it does for many of our associates, behind the front desk. “I was drawn to the exciting world of customer service and the dynamic hotel industry,” she recalls. “It quickly became clear that this would be my field of expertise.”

How do you find inspiration and motivation at work and for your writing?
At work, what inspires me is the opportunity to help my colleagues learn and solve problems. Knowing that I can contribute positively to someone’s understanding or assist in finding a solution gives me a sense of fulfillment. The collaborative aspect of work, where ideas are exchanged and improved upon, also fuels my enthusiasm.
I draw inspiration from many sources for my books and journals. I am surrounded by so many wondrous things and being in tune with my surroundings, listening to nature, caring for people, and keeping my heart open has been the driving force behind my creativity. I expose myself to art, culture, music, film, and other forms of creativity that inspire my storytelling and evoke emotions that translate into writing.
What do you say to people who think one has to choose between having a career or being creative?
It’s completely okay and often enriching to embrace both your career and your creativity, especially if they’re both integral parts of who you are. By nurturing your creative side alongside your career, you not only bring unique perspectives to your work but also find deeper fulfillment in your personal life. Whether you’re an engineer who paints, an administrative professional who writes poetry, or a teacher who plays music, integrating creativity into your life enhances your ability to innovate, problem-solve, and connect with others on a deeper level. Embracing both worlds isn’t just about balancing commitments; it’s about honoring all facets of your identity and allowing each part to inform and enrich the other.
